DUBAIIndia delivered a commanding performance over Pakistan in their Asia Cup 2025 group-stage match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, winning by seven wickets.

Chasing the modest target of 128, India never appeared in serious trouble, anchored by fiery weapons in both bowling and batting departments.

Pakistan, after winning the toss and choosing to bat first, could only muster 127/9 in 20 overs. Their innings lacked sustained partnerships, though Shaheen Shah Afridi’s late-innings assault gave the total some respectability. India’s bowlers, particularly spinners, dictated terms, while the batting lineup’s aggression ensured a swift pursuit.

India’s spin attack was the backbone of their victory. Kuldeep Yadav picked up three key wickets, supported by Axar Patel and Varun Chakravarthy, while Jasprit Bumrah’s early incisive bursts put Pakistan on the back foot.

India's chase

In reply, Abhishek Sharma set the tone with a blazing 31 off 13 balls, punishing the new ball and putting pressure on Pakistan immediately. Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian captain, anchored the chase with an assured knock and good shot selection, ensuring India crossed the line without loss of momentum.

Pakistan lost early momentum when Indian bowlers struck in the powerplay. The middle overs were equally punishing – spin stifled scoring, and regular wickets prevented any batter from building a match-defining partnership. Though Shaheen’s late hitting provided some fireworks, by then the foundation of India’s control was firmly laid.

Tilak Varma also played an important role, contributing 31 runs in 31 balls, keeping the chase steady through a partnership that blunted Pakistan’s chances of mounting pressure.

With this win, India strengthened their position in Group A. Their all-round dominance – bowlers setting up the match and batters finishing it off without drama – sends a clear message of intent. Pakistan, on the other hand, will seek to regroup, especially their top order and middle throng, to find more consistent contributions in such high-stakes games.

The atmosphere in Dubai was electric, as expected for an India-Pakistan fixture. Fans, media and all eyes had anticipated a tight contest, but India’s performance turned it into something more clinical.

Both sides came into the encounter on the back of opening wins in the tournament. India registered a nine-wicket victory against the UAE, while Pakistan defeated Oman by 93 runs.
